The new version 2.0 of Collabtive is a major step forward for the popular web-based management tool. With over 50 changes, this is one of the biggest releases since the initial launch in 2007. All known bugs have been fixed according to the developers. They also overhauled the user interface and added more productivity features. The strongest focus was on security, with many improvements in this crucial area.

For secure usage of Collabtive 2.0 in critical contexts, potential vulnerabilities have been addressed. The SSL detection has been improved. A content security policy HTTP header instructs the user’s browser to block various unsafe behaviours. Input is filtered by HTMLPurifier, a well-proven library that protects against cross-site scripting attacks, while preserving rich formatting options. Files uploaded to Collabtive are no longer exposed with public links — instead, all file requests are routed through Collabtive to restrict access to authorized users. Your files will now be strongly encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard ensuring a high level of safety for important documents. When updating from an older Collabtive installation, all pre-existing files have to be reprocessed to apply the encryption. Therefore it is strongly recommended that you make a backup before applying the update.

The Collabtive user interface received multiple improvements. Customization of the design has been facilitated through the introduction of CSS themes: To create a variation of the default look, you simply copy a theme folder and edit the contained style sheets. Putting this new structure to use, the developers have added a theme named Spring. Its color palette includes light grey tones and fresh greens. The content blocks on the desktop and project dashboards have been wrapped into accordions, speeding up access to each area.

Customer profiles can now be created in the new customer administration of Collabtive 2.0. When adding a project afterwards, you assign the customer whose information is then made available at the top of the project dashboard for a quick look-up of contact details. Accurate planning is straightforward with the new field for a start date. After adding a project, an immediate redirect to the project’s dashboard provides for a smoother workflow. A Chinese translation of the installation procedure has been added. Six of the 39 available translations have been thoroughly revised: Polish, Farsi, Norwegian Bokmal, Norwegian Nynorsk, Simplified Chinese and German. With its extensive multilingualism, Collabtive caters to a world-wide audience of project managers and empowers geographically dispersed teams.
